🔥 Is Your Business fire safe - and compliant?

Let’s be honest—fire safety isn’t the most thrilling topic (sorry to the fire specialists out there!). But when it’s ignored or done badly, the consequences can be devastating.

We’re talking injury, loss of life, and serious disruption to your business.

Whether you’re running an office, a retail space, a school, or a construction site, fire safety compliance isn’t optional. It’s a legal requirement—and more importantly, it saves lives - and ensuring it’s in place, could just well save your entire business one day….

🏚️ Remember Grenfell
The Grenfell Tower tragedy was a stark reminder of what can happen when fire risks are overlooked. Total loss of life. Total loss of trust. And for businesses, a devastating impact that can’t be undone. Fire safety isn’t just red tape—it’s real protection.

What Are Your Fire Safety Responsibilities?

If your business operates from any physical premises, you have a duty to put appropriate fire safety measures in place. That includes:

✅ Clear escape routes – Fire exits and escape routes must be clearly marked, unobstructed, and easy to access at all times.

✅ Fire detection systems – Smoke alarms and fire detection equipment need to be installed, tested, and properly maintained.

✅ Correct signage – Fire action notices, extinguisher locations, and exit signs must be visible and kept up to date.

✅ Electrical safety – Overloaded sockets and dodgy wiring are common fire hazards. Regular inspections are non-negotiable. You also need to ensure fixed wiring testing is done.

✅ Regular fire drills – Practising your emergency procedures means everyone knows what to do when it counts.

But what if I’m just a tenant (renting) in the building?

What if your business activities started a fire?

Being a tenant does not exempt you. Your lease should cover who is responsible for what. This often depends on the type of activities, whether there are other shared tenants and the agreement between you and the landlord.

It’s not uncommon for tenants to have total responsibility for their areas of activity, though often areas with shared central spaces will have some level of central management.

But you still need to ensure your business is protected - and importanly, your insurance is relevant and followed too.

I’ve seen people really caught out when trying to claim on insurance because they did not comply with the safety requirements; and they are often found to be the cause of the fire in the first place.

The Role of Fire Wardens (It’s More Than Wearing a High-Vis!)

Fire wardens play a key role in keeping workplaces safe—especially in higher-risk environments. Their responsibilities include:

🔎 Preventing fire risks – Spotting hazards before they become problems.
🚪 Coordinating evacuations – Making sure everyone exits safely and quickly.
🧯 Checking equipment – Ensuring alarms, extinguishers, and escape routes are in good condition.
👥 Training others – Helping team members understand what to do in an emergency.

Training That Makes a Difference

Fire safety training isn’t just about ticking a box—it’s about equipping your team with the skills and confidence to act fast in a crisis. Our Workplace Safety training includes:

  • Fire Awareness Training – A must for all employees, covering fire prevention and emergency actions.

  • Fire Warden Training – For those responsible for leading fire safety in the workplace.

  • Specialist Fire Safety Courses – Tailored sessions for schools, construction sites, and other higher-risk sectors.

  • First Aid & Emergency Response – Because knowing what to do after a fire matters too.

Off the shelf training is great for awareness, but certain types of organisation will need specific site and activity relevant measures. This is common in research environments, or where chemicals or gases are used.

Don’t Leave It to Chance

Fire safety shouldn’t be an afterthought. It’s a legal obligation—and a vital part of looking after your people and your business.
